Deaf as a Post Lunch Bunch

New 5/7/08: Candids for Adam Meyer, Peter Ward, Frank & Charlie Craighead

Mike F. asked me to pass on a recent telephone scam from a group calling themselves the National Medical Office who call about their enhanced Medicare/Medicaid offer.  Voices have Pakistani accents (not Indian or Afghan), they won't divulge contact info or other similar requests, & shouldn't be calling if you're on the Federal Do Not Call list.  Don't figure any of our group is dumb enough to fall for it, but if you have friends that might, caveat emptor.  If you're not on the Federal DNC list (not Demo Nat'l Cmte), you can register here:  https://www.donotcall.gov/        wf/5.9.08

News:  One of our "favorite" restaurants, is now kaputski.  The Route 89 Diner closed about 2 wks. ago for good.  Deb had a 3 yr. lease on the place, but, declining business from the motel & snowmobilers, was causing too big a loss to keep it up for her.  She closed it abruptly, after about a 15 year run, has sold the inner decorations & is going over to Snow King as their asst. food/beverage mgr.  Oh well, another one bites the dust.  Word is, the restaurant may be scheduled for demolition now.  Here's a pic of the demolition from 3/24/08...

For those of you with my 3D glasses...

This page is dedicated mostly to images of the members of our Jackson, Wyo lunch group, the places we've been, the good times we've shared, & perhaps a few stories we remember or have forgotten but need remembering.  Thumbnail pictures presented here can be clicked on to enlarge to full screen size.  All pictures were taken by me (Walt Farmer) unless otherwise attributed.  (I hope there are some early pictures of members, but I don't think so, we'll see who else will have items to contribute.)

If anyone else wanders through here, our group was started by Bert Raynes & Gus Schwarz,  many years ago (I'll find out later), then came Ray Kepford, Dick O'Brien and Frank Craighead.  It has grown to over 35 members by the time this page is initially posted in 2008.  We meet at a different restaurant each Wed.  to solve the problems of the world (Lord knows, George Bush 43 needs our help desperately if he knows where we are.), and then we meet again the next week to solve the problems of the previous week. It's done, with great aplomb, panache, salt, vinegar, and other assorted condiments.

Our group is made up of friends, friends who are or have been: authors, entrepreneurs, retired military, bankers, professors (teachers), geologists, artists, pilots, bon-vivants, riff-raff, inventors, people from Chicago, downhill skiers, river floaters, former gunfighters, tour guides, park rangers, and other generic miscreants.  We like each other, we have fun & good food, and no, you can't join, we're by invitation only & from the above, we obviously ought to be more selective.  We're just glad we got to know each other & that we came to live in Jackson, Wyo, even though some have the audacity to go somewhere else in the winter - you know who you are.

From Brian Schwarz - "The originals were Bert Raynes, Gus Schwarz, Frank Craighead, and Dick O'Brien.  Dick was retired Air Force.  I think they just invited friends to come, and if they stuck, they stuck.  Frank suggested they become ROMEO'S, as in Retired Old Men Eating Out, but I think it became DAAP when someone asked Dick something and Dick smiled and said 'strawberries,' which was what he was eating, but not related to the question he was asked.  I showed up when my father needed help getting to the restaurants."

Bert:  "Of course Gus and I were not starting anything, just going out to lunch when the ladies were.  Many months later, Dick O'Brien and then Ray Kepford.  I wish you or someone with digitals in their veins would take a lot more pictures.  Guys who dislike it, can hang their heads or ....."

As keeper (Walt) of the record book, I decree there's only one.  The Most Members At One Lunch is, May I have the envelope please.... 19, which now has been set at 3 locations: The Cantina at the Jackson Hole Airport, the Virginian, and at Abuelitos.  If anyone wants to start any new records & keep score accordingly, let me know.  This record does not include guests (my rule).
