1/29/14 - Ocean City
Hear Bert talk about his love of nature, birds, & public drunkenness.
***Mental calculation of
payment for lunches should include w/menu-in-hand on ordering:
+ drink(s) + tax + tip(usually 15-20% before tax).
Peter W. suggests this formula: Food + drink x .25 (5% tax and 20% tip).

This page is dedicated mostly to images of the members of our Jackson, Wyo lunch group, the places we've been, the good times we've shared, & perhaps a few stories we remember or have forgotten but need remembering. Thumbnail pictures presented here can be clicked on to enlarge to full screen size. All pictures were taken by me (Walt Farmer) unless otherwise attributed. (I hope there are some early pictures of members, but I don't think so, we'll see who else will have items to contribute.)
If anyone else wanders through here, our group was started by Bert Raynes & Gus Schwarz, many years ago, then came Ray Kepford, Dick O'Brien and Frank Craighead. It has grown to over 40 members by the time this page is posted in summer of 2011. We meet at a different restaurant each Wed. to solve the problems of the world, and then we meet again the next week to solve the problems of the previous week. It's done, with great aplomb, self-rightiousness, perspicacity, panache, salt, vinegar, ketchup (catsup), and other assorted condiments.
Our group is made up of friends, friends who are or have been: authors, entrepreneurs, retired military, bankers, professors (teachers), geologists, artists, pilots, bon-vivants, riff-raff, inventors, people from Chicago, downhill skiers, river floaters, former gunfighters, tour guides, park rangers, and other generic miscreants. We like each other, we have fun & good food, and no, you can't just join; we're by invitation only & from the above, we obviously ought to be more selective. We're just glad we got to know each other & that we came to live in Jackson, Wyo, even though some have the audacity (temerity?) to go somewhere else in the winter - you know who you are. History will judge us as eclectic, and hungry.
From Brian Schwarz - "The originals were Bert Raynes, Gus Schwarz, Frank Craighead, and Dick O'Brien. Dick was retired Air Force. I think they just invited friends to come, and if they stuck, they stuck. Frank suggested they become ROMEO'S, as in Retired Old Men Eating Out, but I think it became DaaP when someone asked Dick something and Dick smiled and said, 'Strawberries!', which was what he was eating, but not related to the question he was asked. I showed up when my father needed help getting to the restaurants."
Bert: "Of course Gus and I were not starting anything, just going out to lunch when the ladies were. Many months later, add in Dick O'Brien and then Ray Kepford. I wish you (talking to Walt) or someone with digitals in their veins would take a lot more pictures. Guys who dislike it, can hang their heads or ....."
As keeper (Walt) of the record book, I decree there's only one. The Most Members At One Lunch is, may I have the envelope please.... 21, which now has been set at Chinatown on 12/10/08, & again at Dornans on the occasion of our farewell to Greg McHuron (7/25/12). If anyone wants to start any new records & keep score accordingly, let me know. This record does not include guests (my rule). I was "honored" by Bert at lunch on 10/10/12, with this linked (yet notably unframed) proclamation, so solemnly read by John Drew. (I'm thinking I was dead already.)

Bert can't remember the name of the restaurant where he & Gus first went to lunch, but it was where the Hong Kong Buffet is now off Broadway.
In case you were wondering...in the early years of the group...before...email...at the end of each lunch we'd just pick a place to meet the following week. If anyone missed a lunch, they'd just have to call one of the others to find out where we'd be going. As you might expect, there was a lot of indecision after a lunch, some would leave before a decision was reached, etc. Walt initiated the email system about 2003. All were invited to suggest a place but few ever did, so we'd go to Walt's selection each week until 2013 when Peter Ward took over as "social director." It's worked well.
Our lowest total gathering in "modern" memory, was 6, at the Cadillac on 12/24 of 2008.
We went to eat at 43 North in 2009, but when the group of about 12 showed up, we were told they didn't have enough staff & couldn't wait on us that day, at least not efficiently. As we'd had problems there before, everyone packed up & went to Pizza Hut on the fly. 43 North was added to our blacklist, at least until it came under new ownership later in 2010.
Around 2004, was the only time we've had lunch outside of the Jackson area. There was a major exhibit on Lewis & Clark at the Idaho Falls Museum, & about 8 of us went over & lunched at Chilis that day.
Location favorites tend to be: Chinatown, Sidewinders, the Virginian, El Abuelitos, John Simms' house when the cygnets are in da pond, & Walt's house, so I'm told.
One time at the Betty Rock, Walt went over early & glued a shiny gold Sacajawea dollar to a wooden plank out front, and... no one took the bait.
Peter W., John S., Dave, Charlie and several others, spent part of the summer of 2010 building a deck out Bert's back door for his summertime usage with Penny. As soon as it was finished, we had our first lunch there too in Sept.
August 2010 at Teton Pines. From time to time, the chip-ins come up a little short & those who haven't left, finish out the check at their expense. It's our only running item of occasional contention. On this day, we came up about $140. short! Whoa. No one could figure it out, but Walt advised the gang that afternoon of the considerable shortfall & suggested some make up was due those who'd covered this whopper. Later that day, not realizing he'd had the money pass his place at the table & had absent-mindedly put it all in his shirt pocket, John Simms fessed up to being this week's gremlin & got everyone paid back soon after.
About 2005, we went to the lunch bar at the 4 Seasons Resort. Walt happened to be the first to order that day & ordered a burger, onions, no cheese. After about a 45 min. wait, the group started getting their food & of course, Walt was the last to receive his order. The burger, had cheese on it, so, he asked the waiter to return it & provide one without the cheese. He waited patiently. After about another 45 min. for just his order, it finally came out. Upon inspection, he realized that the kitchen over that time span, had simply scraped off (most) of the cheese & turned the burger over. Classy operation. He took it to the manager, didn't eat lunch that day, but got his money back with no offer of any comps.
The only time we've missed two consecutive weeks was over the holiday season of 2013/14.
